How To Value Magic The Gathering Cards - Discovery The Value Of The Cards In Your MTG Collection

By: Jonas FitzGerald

Understanding the worth in your Magic the Gathering cards is very important if you plan on selling any of them. It is vital to know before you begin whether you are dealing with cards which are highly sought after and worth quite a bit, or are junk that nobody wants. If you get it wrong, you could be wasting your time trying to sell cards that nobody wants.

The value of Magic the Gathering cards is incredibly variable, and sometimes has no logic to it, but broadly speaking, value can be determined by a card's rarity.

Rare and Mythic Rare Cards

Rare and mythic rare cards are obviously the hardest cards to get hold of so do tend to have a higher intrinsic value. This obviously does not guarantee a card's value.

As a guide, when a new rare card is released, it can generally be worth anything in the range of 50c to $10, whereas mythic rares tend to have a slightly larger range from $1 to anything around $50 for the most highly prized mythic rares.

Before selling a rare or mythic rare card, it very worthwhile consulting a Magic the Gathering seller's site to look for approximate card prices. It should be noted however that these prices are usually higher than what you would get were you to sell your cards on an auction site. The best indicator of value is to go to a site such as eBay and see how much other copies of the same cards have sold for in the recent past - this is your best guide to the value of your cards.

Uncommon Cards

These cards are less sought after than rares and mythic rares, and hence are worth a good amount less. The most you could generally expect to get for the most sought after Uncommon cards is between $1 to $2, and this is the exception rather than the rule. Generally speaking, most uncommons have little value, and are only worth a few pence.

If you want to sell uncommons, I'd recommend selling them in play sets (4 copies of the same card) at a minimum, if not in a larger bulk quantity (for example, 20 or 50 different uncommons in one lot).

Common Cards

The lowest in value is obviously common cards. The common Magic the Gathering cards are very numerous and easy to get hold of, hence they have almost no value at all. If you wish to sell common cards from your collection, its only worthwhile doing it in large bulk lots (say, hundreds or thousands at a time). Even then, the amount you get will be low.

This is a general guide to give you an idea of what you could expect to get from your cards. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule, and the biggest variation lies within rare and mythic rare cards, so do your research before you sell.

Another caveat to note is that the very oldest cards from sets such as Alpha and Beta will have the greatest variation in value. Any very old cards like this should be researched before beginning selling.

This guide is a good starting point for understanding how much value you have in your Magic the Gathering cards. Its important to understand this at least to some extent before you start selling so that you don't waste your time and money trying to sell cards that nobody wants and are probably worthless.
