3 Things To Consider When Bidding At Seized Vehicle Auctions

By: Gordon Roberts

Buying a seized vehicle can save you a lot of money. In some cases, you can buy a car for 90% off the usual price. Banks, government institutions and lending companies want to get rid of seized vehicles to cut down on expenses to maintain and keep them in storage. So, they would rather sell them cheap at the soonest possible time than keep them for several months while the cars depreciate in value.

You can find cheap cars at a government car auction, bank sponsored auctions or private auction companies. Once you see an announcement for a seized car auction, you need to act fast so that you can have a wide choice of cars to bid for. Just be cautious when bidding for a seized auto because there are some hidden considerations to think about.

Inspect the seized auto for damage. Many of these cars were probably damaged in car accidents. The only way you can be sure is by getting an official car history report from a Carfax. You can't expect the auction organizers to practice due diligence, except maybe with a government car auction. Although the cars may look alright, there may be hidden damages from previous accidents.

Check for vehicle damage. Some of the seized vehicles may have been involved in car accidents. You don't want to buy a used car that was previously involved in a major accident. Government seized vehicles usually provide history reports for their buyers, but other auction organizers do not. In this case, you can check the car's history by running a Carfax report.

Deal with authentic auction companies. There are many fake seized vehicle auctions online. These unscrupulous people can use your identity to buy things for themselves once you submit personal and financial info for your application. Do a background check with BBB or other business monitoring bureaus.

A government car auction is a good place to start hunting for a seized vehicle and if you have to buy elsewhere make sure that you buy from reputable companies.
