Dining Chairs - Do Not Forget Them During Fall Decorating

By: Richard B. Ramirez

It's transition time. Dining rooms all across the country are shedding their normal colors and themes and beautiful oranges, reds and yellows are rushing in. It's fall, and a time of year that is surrounded by food, family and festivities.

Many people choose to show off their festive side by changing up the decor in the dining room. This means tablecloths with a Thanksgiving or fall pattern are being pulled out and set on the table, along with matching napkins. There is probably a gorgeous centerpiece, and maybe even a collection of festive fall china that everyone will be enjoying their meals on.

That sounds like a complete set up, right? Wrong. You have forgotten one extremely important part of the equation - dining chairs.

Your dining chairs are a huge part of the dining room set up. Think about it. Chances are you have 6, 8 or more chairs around the dining table so there is ample room for all of your guests at the holiday meals. While the dining table may have some good decor on it, you are actually missing out on a major opportunity by leaving the chairs with their same old - same old appearance. You need to dress them up.

Theme Matching

Keep in mind as you take on this endeavor that the dining room is always a much more formal setting. So you don't want to go too overboard with your choices in decorating your dining chairs.

The easiest way to do this is to look for chair covers that will fit your dining chairs. Often these are available in a number of solid colors or prints. If you already have festive china and a major centerpiece, you may want to stick with a solid color that goes with the theme, so it's not really as well overwhelming. To make it a small nicer you may want to choose ribbon of a complimentary color to use to tie the cover together.

If you have much less festive china and table decor, you might want to let your dining chairs do all the talking and go for something with a print or design that sets the mood.

The Feel

While most people coming to the dining room are thinking of the meal they are going to eat and relying on their sense of smell and taste, they also are using their sense of feel. For this reason, you want to make sure your dining chairs are going to still be comfy and nice to the touch.

Remember the season. It's fall and therefore you want much more rich and warm feeling materials on your dining chairs such as chenille or actually velvet. Just as the home cooked food on the table should bring a sense of warmth and comfort to your guests as they think back to their youth, so should the feel of your dining chairs be warm and comforting, reminding them of days gone by, sitting in front of a fire, with no cares in the world.
